In the past 10-20 years tremendous advances in our understanding of the basic neuroscience of addiction – how drugs and alcohol cause changes in the brain centers that regulate reward, motivation and addiction – have improved our ability to engage and support individuals with SUD and optimize their recovery journey. Similarly, understanding the practical realities and rewards of being an SUD treatment provider and how to build an effective interdisciplinary team, will provide relief for providers who have been reluctant to embrace SUD treatment as part of their scope of practice.
