Funding Opportunity: Expansion of Medication Units Round Two

Applications are due April 28, 2025, at 1 p.m. PST. The California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), in partnership with The Center at Sierra Health Foundation, is funding the expansion of Medication Units (MUs) across the state.

Funding

This grant opportunity includes efforts to increase access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) for rural areas, justice-involved populations, Indigenous and Native communities, patients without transportation and areas that do not have a Narcotic Treatment Program (NTP) within close proximity to patients in need of those services. This 24-month contract will be for up to $750,000 per MU.

An MU is a geographically separate facility from an NTP but operates under that NTP’s license and is a treatment facility from which licensed practitioners and/or community pharmacists dispense medications for opioid use disorder (OUD). MUs allow the NTP to extend services to communities that may not otherwise have access to MOUD.

Through this funding, Narcotic Treatment Programs will be able to:

  • Establish medication units
  • Utilize funds for general maintenance of units
  • Redesign spaces
  • Market and engage the community around the services

Eligibility

Eligible organizations must meet all the following minimum requirements:

  • The primary NTP must have a valid DHCS license
  • The primary NTP must have a valid DEA registration
  • The primary NTP must have a valid Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) accreditation
  • The primary NTP must demonstrate Drug Medi-Cal (DMC) Enrollment

Note: Provider organizations may apply for multiple MUs per eligible NTP license, but separate applications are required for each MU requested.

Grant Award Amount

Applicants can apply for up to $750,000 per medication unit.
